Last night at the Oscars, for the first time in 36 years, the incredible Barbra Streisand sang “The Way We Were” during the Memoriam Segment. The last time she sang at the Oscars was in 1977 for her Best Original Song from A Star is Born, “Evergreen“! It was a perfect moment on stage as A Star is Born was just released for the first time on Blu-ray on the 5th of February!
A Star is Born has been recreated twice since it’s original was released in 1937, however the version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson was the first to adapt the story to the music business rather than Hollywood. I actually felt this was more ideal because it was co-produced with Streisand who knows the music business very well and I felt her role as Esther Hoffman came naturally. The chemistry between Streisand and Kristofferson was incredible, which isn’t surprising as they are both phenomenal actors, but I literally got goosebumps watching them.
The film is about John Norman Howard, a successful reckless rock-star that is watching his life crumble behind the sheen of alcohol. By coincidence he meets Esther Hoffman, an aspiring singer, in a club. Her wit and nonchalance to his “greatness” appeal to him and they start dating shortly after. John helps Esther with her career, who is actually an amazing musician, but just as soon as she is put into the limelight she overshadows everything he is. Esther and John’s love and passion goes far beyond the music, it speaks to a deeper part of us about our choices and the difference between what we ‘feel’ is best for the people we love and what truly is.
One of the most amusing and incredible things I read about the production of A Star is Born was that all the costumes for Esther came from Streisand’s own closet! It’s actually in the credits! I wish I had a closet like that. She looks incredible!
I also got to watch A Star is Born on our new 60″ LED TV during my Mommy Me Time, the detail on the Blu-ray was so incredible that my teen walked in and thought I was watching a home video. No kidding! It is extremely clear and crisp. Not only is this a special BD Blu-ray, meaning that it comes with a special 40pg Blu-ray Book with images from the movie and information on the actors and how they reinvented the story, but it also has many special features.
Bonus Features Include:
- Commentary by Barbra Streisand
- Wardrobe Tests with Commentary by Brbra Streisand
- Deleted Scenes/Alternate Takes with Optional Commentary by Barbra Streisand
- Soundtrack Remastered in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
- A Star is Born Trailer Gallery
Not only did A Star is Born win an Oscar for Best Original Song, it also won a Golden Globe and a Grammy for Song of the Year. I know many of us are running out to catch up on all the Oscar Nominee’s and Winners movies, don’t forget those that paved the way to this years spotlight! This is definitely one to take home and experience the incredible magnetism of the great Hollywood classic love stories.
