It was your typical beautiful afternoon in Missouri when we decided to go on an adventure in the wilderness. There is no better place to experience what it would be like if nature overgrew man’s technology than to go to Creve Coeur Park outside of St. Louis, under the bridge. Every time I wander through the forest to the bridge I get these images in my head from I Am Legend.
It is breathtaking to stand underneath it and look up at miles of concrete bearing down at you. You get this feeling of vertigo, even though you are standing on the ground.
We ventured out on foot from the lakeside and wandered through the trees to the bridge. There is this easy winding path made not only for walking, but also for bike riders so you have to be careful to stay on your side. Being under the bridge apparently reminded my teen of Planet of the Apes.
|Darn you, you dirty apes!|
The boys left their markings in the sand before we left. My husband helped my tot draw his, guess what my teen wrote…
|Judah was here.|
After joking around with my teen about how one could survive during the Apocalypse, whether by invasion of genetic re-coding or mutated apes, we spent the last bit of time playing by the lake. We collected a few rocks to take home.
You can also rent boats, kayaks and canoes to go out on the lake for $15. We’re going to do that some other afternoon, we were just enjoying the fresh air with the boys. It is such a beautiful park and one that holds the myth of how Creve Coeur received it’s name; although Creve Coeur in French actually translates to ‘Broken Heart’.
If you are looking for a quiet place to relax, read a good book, hike with the kids (or even go on a bike ride), float around in a boat, pick up rocks on the beach or… you know… go LARPing; this is (so far) one of the better parks I’ve had the pleasure of randomly being shown to by my husband.
I love it here.
