I recently got to review a great new interactive children’s book called Arlo Needs Glasses by Barney Saltzberg. Before I received the book I figured it would be a typical children’s book with cute pictures of a dog wearing glasses, I was pleasantly surprised with how neat this book was.
One out of five school-age children need eyeglasses, and one beloved children’s author shows them just how lucky they are. Going from two eyes to four isn’t a bummer, says Barney Saltzberg, the creative force behind nearly 40 popular children’s books. In fact, it’s a rich adventure. Just ask Arlo, a shaggy, free-spirited dog who loves to play catch- until one day, he can’t see the ball anymore. He needs glasses!
Arlo Needs Glasses is such a fun book. My kids always look books that have things to do, I think it helps them better understand the story when they get to participate. Almost every page in this book had some way to “get inside” the story whether it was a pop up, a pull tab, or better yet glasses to put on! Like usual, my kids see a package delivered and immediately want to see what is inside, when they saw a colorful book inside they were very anxious to open it. My youngest child loves books, so she was extra excited, however when my 5 year old saw all the neat things in the book he ran over to play and read too.
Inside this adorable book is a story of a kid who likes to play catch with his dog until the dog has trouble seeing the ball. The boy decides he needs to see the eye doctor. Each page has a fun step showing what actually happens at the eye doctor. Arlo starts with the standard eye exam on the wall, which is also a fun pull tab, and then has to put his face against the eye exam machine that I myself have used, this page is a fun pull out eye machine that the kids can look into. I think that page is my favorite, I just think it is really neat to have a fold out eye machine! My kids liked the next page the best. This book has 4 pairs of glasses in it that come out and you try them on the Arlo that pops up on the next page! My kids actually tried them on themselves as well!
Overall we really enjoyed this book. We are big fans of books in this house, we feel that reading is so important so I really love a book that gets a child excited about reading. The other thing I love about this book is that it is such a fun and creative way to show kids what happens at the eye doctor and that they don’t need to be scared. I have never needed glasses as of yet, and neither of my kids do, but our good friend’s little boy wears glasses and I think this book is great for children facing the uncertainty of glasses and those with glasses to see that they aren’t alone and all will be OK.
