I’ve written a lot about why Boys & Girls Clubs of America and why it’s so important to me. When my son and I were on our own and he was just starting out in school, BGCA was there for us. It wasn’t just a place to drop him off in the morning and where he went after school to wait for me, they were like a second family to us. They helped him with his homework, gave him friends as an only child, taught him lessons, encouraged him and built his self-esteem at a time when he was having difficulties at a new school. As a single parent that had no other choice but to work and spend 2 hours a day in traffic, Boys & Girls Club was my savior.
I am enormously proud to be able to tell you about Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s new partnership with Amway – Positive Sprouts! They’ve teamed up to teach children about healthy diets and lifestyles!
POSITIVE SPROUTS® Sustainability Grants – Amway is providing $30,000 in Sustainability Grants to ten deserving Boys & Girls Clubs who previously received community gardens from Amway. The funds are designed to assist Clubs with the maintenance of their garden as well as improve nutrition for Club members.
Garden In A Box Kits – Amway is donating 150 Garden In A Box kits to Boys & Girls Clubs who demonstrated an interest and need for establishing a community gardening program at their Club. The kit includes a variety of fruit and vegetable seeds and supplies Clubs need to get started.
POSITIVE SPROUTS® Curriculum – Amway is enabling the delivery of a healthy food curriculum to 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide ensuring that all Clubs have access to educational materials promoting healthy eating habits.
Teaching kids early about where their food comes from and how to have healthy eating habits is important. Getting them excited about eating healthy foods through gardening helps most get over that bump about eating fruits and vegetables regularly, which is essential in promoting healthy eating habits. The partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America & Amway is for three years and their goals are to:
- Educate Club members on the importance and value of consuming fruit and vegetables.
- Combat hunger and lack of access to fruits/vegetables by providing Club members and their families’ fruits/vegetables that are harvested from community gardens.
- Build a foundation for a long-term and ongoing improvement in nutrition for America’s young people.
This is an amazing opportunity for club members! I know many Boys & Girls Clubs are connected to schools and the positive impact that this would make on the community and education of club kids will be monumental! I can’t wait to see how it reflects for the the children. It is programs and partnerships such as this that really make a difference in our children’s lives.
I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Amway. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.
