I was given this really great opportunity to have a ConAgra Backyard Bash with my family. My little tot is the biggest fan of Chef Boyardee and really when he saw the apron he thought he was wearing a Ravioli shirt since that is what he likes to eat all the time. I thought it was cute!
The reason for the Backyard Bash was to not only have fun with the family, creating memories and burying our keepsakes in the earth with the Time Capsule, but also to teach the children where ConAgra food (and food in general) comes from. We have a garden out back so I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to explain how the food gains nourishment from the earth and grows into the plants that eventually become parts of the Ravioli.
Do you know where your food comes from? ConAgra was nice enough to send this infographic over to share with my family and all of you readers. It explains where Hunts Tomatoes are grown and how they’re prepared for the can, how Egg Beaters are actual real eggs (you didn’t know that!) and the pastas used in Chef Boyardee are actually from recipes of a real Chef – Chef Hector Boiardi! They are also made with quality ingredients, no preservatives and are authentic recipes.
We started out with the Ravioli can that we used to make the Beef Ravioli Pizza Cups with Tomato Basil Salsa that I’ll show you in a little bit.
Take off the wrapper and make sure you clean the can out really well.
Then you can decorate the can with stickers or use your imagination!
|We “planted” our can outside and filled it with soil from our garden.
It’s right next to an already grown Burpee Beefsteak Tomato plant!
Then Mommy put the seeds in because the kids spilled them.
Then we put in some water and now we wait!
If you would like to do this activity at home with your family, here are some tips from ConAgra!
- Plant the tomato/herb seeds in the can to grow into seedlings.
- Make sure your seeds are planted 1/4 inch deep with 3 seeds per inch.
- Tomato seedlings thrive in sunlight so be sure to pick a well-lit spot.
- Once the seedlings grow larger than 5 inches tall, transfer them to a larger pot, or plant them in the ground to allow the roots to grow.
- When your tomatoes turn a deep, red color, they are ready to pick!
- Store your tomatoes at room temperature and keep them out of direct sunlight.
Day #2 we had fun while my husband was grilling. Some of our family came over and played bubbles with the boys, I was kind of wrapped up with the kids at this point and these were my only photos.

Egads! He’s not wearing his protective Chef Boyardee apron!
So, I said that on Day #1 I made the Beef Ravioli Pizza Cups with Tomato Basil Salsa. I also said my tot loves his Ravioli. He also loves Pizza, so this was a win-win.
Mommy likes Minestrone though, so I had to try the Minestrone Pasta Salad.
And never forget Chocolate Chip Cookies!
These Chocolate Chip Cookies are made with Egg Beaters, they are real eggs, minus the yolk. They’re packaged without the yolk as a heart-healthy option to shell eggs. Plus, they are a lot faster than breaking eggs open. They provide nutrients without the fat, calories or cholesterol of shelled eggs!
Sadly, I had to have a tooth removed just before this and it was kind of random, so I didn’t get to eat a lot of the food, but was a really wonderful weekend; sharing memories with our children and good food with family. On a weekend when we are meant to remember our veterans and heroes for the sacrifices they made for us to have moments like this, it was really special.
We got to share some of our ‘special things’ in our Time Capsule that came with our Kit. Here were some of the things we placed inside (but not all! could be buried treasure!).
This was really a fun activity to do. You can make a Time Capsule with your family by getting a secure box and then share photos, artifacts or write letters about what you dream to do someday. We will plant ours under our new tomatoes once they grow into plants that we can put into the soil. Memories in our garden… kind of lovely.
You can have your own Backyard Bash this summer! Just pick up some great recipes from ReadySetEat and you can print out the infographic from ConAgra to teach your children where their food comes from! Have fun with your family and share some memories! They last forever.
