Do you celebrate Earth Day?
I personally love/hate Earth Day. I think it is great to spend a day celebrating the accomplishments made in environmental protection but if the focus doesn’t remain upon teaching and inspiring appreciation for Earth’s environment to more individuals, I think it is a waste of time. Time and time again, I see activities centered on “love the Earth” or “Love Mother Earth”, but I would rather see more with the message “care for the Earth”. Although the word “love” should be a word that invocates a call to action, I think the misuse/overuse of this word in our society dilutes its meaning.
Earth Day should be a day of learning on how you can make a difference in protecting the environment for us and future generations. It should be a day of making choices to change what we can; just like we attempt to do on New Year’s Day. This year, I encourage you to make a commitment to change at least one small thing that would help preserve the beauty we have here on Earth. It could be as simple as deciding to make sure all batteries you use aren’t thrown in the trash, but are taken to the proper recycling center.
Every little bit helps and as the famous quote by Gandhi states:
You must be the change you want to see in the world.
So, today start being the change and stop complaining that there is garbage at the playground and pick it up instead.
Today, change your state of mind and step forward with renewed confidence and passion that you can do something about what is wrong in the world around you.
Today, choose to “be the change”.
