If it is one thing my husband loves more than our family it is DIY Home Remodeling projects. He takes on so many projects in the house that it is a wonder that he can ever sit still! Going over the before and after photos amazes me, he has a knack for creating rooms and a skill when it comes to figuring out how to create a modern open atmosphere.
Here is one of my favorite little projects we did for our Fireplace Room; it’s called a Floating Bookshelf! We took the idea from the shelves beside the fireplace that we didn’t like and the closet on the other side that we didn’t like too much either. Merging the two together created the perfect attachment to the room!
On the bottom two photos you can see on the left white doors that open up to a closet, on the right you can see what we turned that into, the floating bookshelf. Actually, it’s not just a bookshelf, it is also a desk!
It’s where we hide our surround sound system. You can see the little speakers and they’re powered via blu-tooth so we can use our phones to control the music wherever we happen to be in the house.
Here are a few tips on creating your own Floating Bookshelf:
- Make sure to bolt the shelves and/or desk to the walls for child safety. You can use specially designed child safety tools for bookshelves or just 3in bolts.
- If you want to create a sleek look you can use wall tiles instead of just painting the wood!
- Make sure to use masking tape around the edges of the closet and a drop cloth (or newspaper) on the floor to make sure that the paint doesn’t drip outside of the area.
It took us a long time to pick out the perfect floors for the bedrooms. My husband and Father-in-Law put the flooring in themselves. Each of the bedrooms has this beautiful golden wood tone laminate. Laminate is the best low price flooring possible if you can’t afford hardwood floors.
They were able to get all three rooms finished within less than 48 hours!
Our living-room floors still needs to be done, but you can get an idea of what we’re looking at through the images below.
We’re looking at darker wood colors for the living-room floor, like the Iron Sapele Laminate from Floor and Decor. I love this color!
Can you imagine what our living-room would look like with those floors? It’s just gorgeous! They also have a Calculation Station that helps figure out how much it would cost per sqft of space. This way you can figure out which type of flooring is best for you price wise, whether that is porcelain, ceramic, stone, tile, wood and laminate. Their laminate flooring prices go as low as .49 cents a sqft!
I do want to make a note that their hardwood flooring prices are much more inexpensive that what you are going to find at a hardware store. Some are actually as low as $1.79! I haven’t seen that in a shop and we’ve been looking at floors for a year now.
They also have the best selection in tiles that I’ve personally seen. Our kitchen, fireplace room, bathrooms and dining room are all finished in ceramic tile and I love, love, love my tile floors. It is certainly something you might want to consider if you are remodeling your dining room, kitchen or bathrooms!
Floor and Decor also provides all the other essentials you might not think about when looking at new floors.
- Home Installation Kits
- Edge Molding
- Floor Protectors
- Concrete Cleaners
- … and more
We have radiant heat floors in our home, but if you want to add a nice touch while you are remodeling your floors you can add Floor Warming system! They are amazing in the winter!
I really love this shop. My husband and I have been perusing ideas again since he was laid off and started back up on home projects. We feel so blessed to have found the perfect house for us that it would be a shame for us not to give it its best potential! I think all homes are like that, every once in awhile it just needs to have a make-over to feel beautiful again.

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Floor and Decor. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.
