Spring has certainly seemed to have evaded us this year, again. Last year we were melting quite rapidly in 80′ temperatures and this year, on the very first day of Spring, we have (another) major winter storm. It had kind of given me the winter blues.
I was getting a little downhearted about all this cold. I don’t like the cold. It is very pretty and elegantly white outside, but I don’t like going out there. So it was a nice blessing to see little whispers of Spring in my backyard. The stems of spring flowers trying to burst through the frost, the birds chirping in the morning, little buds peeking on the branches of trees even though they might be covered in several inches of snow. It brings me out of my winter gloom.
Yesterday I watched as these two Cardinals flew around in a circle outside our window. They followed each other from branch to branch. It was the strangest thing I’d ever seen. I later threw them some food since I figured that was a lot of work.
It’s actually nice to see the annoying Grackles back, even if they try to fly at my head some days. The Mourning Doves that no longer are afraid of me and tend to just wander around while I’m outside and the skittish Finches. Most of the birds just fly to the nearest branches when I go out and tweet (or squawk) at me until I toss them some birdseed. They’re demanding little things, but they remind me of the warmer months ahead.
I actually got my tot into bird watching with me. His favorite birds are the Robins because they’re so big and plump. They’re also not afraid of him when he rushes to say Hello! and instead of fluttering off as fast as possible to a new yard, they just kind of hop away from him or fly up to a branch he can’t get at. It reminds me of how they kick their babies out of the house when they get too big and stand guard, watching from above, as they figure out their way around. They too are up in the branches, watching as my son figures out the world below.
If you are feeling a little emotionally under the weather from the extended winteriness, just look outside. Spring is peeking up out of the roots despite the chill, she is singing us her sweet songs and just waiting with us.
She may not be so flashy, but she sure is something do wait for.
