We’ve been trying to work out some hospital bills due to the fact that the insurance was charged incorrectly. This means we have to go back through all of them and call and have them reran and go through lots of entertaining things to get them paid off. Well, the other day we had one bill mailed to us so we could see the details and were shocked beyond belief when we found there were a dozen Illegal Drug Tests taken on my husband in the ER without consent, without his knowledge and for just going in because he was having some chest pains. My husband has a heart murmur and it bothers him from time to time, that day it was pretty bad so he went in to get it checked because he was lightheaded. Little did we know we’d be charged hundreds of dollars for tests we never knew they could authorize.
After much arguing with the hospital, I came to these conclusions:
- The paper you sign when you first go into the ER that says they can treat you, also gives them the right to take any drug testing they want to run and without telling you.
- The hospital says that this is mandatory for them for anyone that goes into the ER. (Although that can’t be true as they have never done this to me or my 3 year old.)
- The ER doctors run these tests on anyone that comes into the ER complaining of chest pains because some people might be using Cocaine. (I read this in the Times.)
- Even if you tell them you are not taking any drugs, they will still (without knowledge) take the tests.
- This is profiling.
- It doesn’t seem legal.
