~I received an iSwimBand sample for the purpose of reviewing. Opinions and stories are my own.~
Learning to swim and drowning prevention are super important issues to me. I live in Florida where we are surrounded by water in so many ways from pools to lakes and canals to simple ditches on the side of the road. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death of children under 18 in the US and is in fact, the number one cause of accidental death of children in 18 states. What may surprise you is that 88% of drownings occur with some type of supervision present. I put both my children in swim lessons at around 9 months old. My oldest who is 5 is now a mermaid in the water but my youngest at 2 is an okay swimmer but still needs a lot of work and they both need constant supervision around water.
Aquatic Safety Concepts has announced the introduction of its revolutionary new iSwimband, the first portable and personal drowning detection system for parents and caregivers. It is a wearable Bluetooth sensor that is worn by children and toddlers to alert the parents’ iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch should a swimmer remain submerged for too long a period of time, and/or if a non-swimmer should accidentally fall into the water. iSwimband works in pools, lakes, the ocean – even spas and bathtubs.
It is a lightweight headband that swimmers can also attach to their swim cap or water goggles. If a swimmer is underwater beyond a preset time limit it will trigger an alert to a Bluetooth-enabled iOS device or music player. Non-swimming toddlers can wear a tamper resistant wristband version which will also send an alert if they accidentally enter the water. Unlike wearable sensors that tell you how much you’ve walked in a day, iSwimband has the potential to save lives and prevent needless tragedies.
- Comfortable lightweight headband fits most swimmers
- Includes wristband or clip for toddlers
- One-time setup takes only a few minutes
- Works with goggles/swim caps
- Monitor up to 8 iSwimbands per iOS device
- Up to 100 foot range (depending on environmental conditions)
- Includes free companion iSwimband app
Aquatic Safety Concepts LLC, the company behind iSwimband, was founded by three fathers after one of their children’s classmates drowned at a town park. The 9-year-old boy was believed to have been submerged for 5 minutes before his body was finally found. The tragedy occurred despite several lifeguards, day camp counselors, and even parents watching the water that day. It really can happen anywhere and anytime! Deeply impacted by the needlessness of that event, and its effect on the entire community, the three founders realized that this was the purpose of their lives: to reduce – if not eradicate – the incidence of preventable drowning.
Think of it this way, have you ever attended a birthday party at a house that had a pool or a park that was near a lake. In situations like that the iSwimband is not only good when you are swimming but good when you are just around water. At a park you could literally turn your back to fill your child’s lunch plate with food and your child can head to the water’s edge and fall in and you might not even know it. Using this band it would alert your phone that you set up with the included app with an alarm that lets you know the band is in water. It is a scary thought but it can happen. If you are at a crowded pool party or a water park your child can go under water and if there are a bunch of floats in the water you might not even be able to see a child under water.
I am the type of person that constantly thinks “what if” so I am excited to see a product to try and help prevent such a terrible tragedy. Staying alert and constant supervision is key and while also using the iSwimband you get an extra layer of protection that can help put your mind at rest.
