I don’t know about where you are, but I know most of the Midwest is under excessive heat warnings. On my way home this morning it was already 100 degrees, at 11:45am! That’s just miserable. My kids aren’t eating much, it’s just too hot! About the only thing my son wants is Popsicles. After way too many Popsicles this week, I started thinking of other cool treats, something healthier. Watermelon was the first thing that came to mind. Every summer we like to buy a watermelon and carve it like a pumpkin! This is way better than carving pumpkins, and much less messy, smells better too! As you carve it, save all the watermelon pieces in a bowl.
There’s a few different things you can do with the watermelon. In our cooking class we went to, the kids practiced cutting with watermelons. Give your child a plastic knife or butter knife and they can practice cutting on the watermelon, they are very easy to cut so it’s good for practicing. Make sure you tell them to always point the knife down and never point at anyone.
After they’ve cut it up, give your child a few chunks of watermelon and a ziploc bag. Put the pieces in and zip it up, have them smash the watermelon with their hands, once its all smooshed up, give them a straw and they can drink the juice!
Another fun thing to do with the smashed up watermelon is stick it in the freezer, let it freeze a little and it turns into a nice cool slushy.
Also, save a few chunks, stick them in the freezer for a little while, then toss them in a glass of lemonade!
