Solitude. During this hectic time of year, my mind often wanders to peaceful thoughts of silence and solitude. It honestly would be great if these items could be wrapped up and stuffed in my Christmas stocking, but of course they aren’t really tangible items. There are gifts that do offer the opportunity of silence and solitude and thankfully they are gift wrap friendly. One of these items is a tent. As a Montanan, nothing offers the opportunity to get away from it all like a tent does and even now as I am living in California, I can get away from most of it with a tent.
My husband and I have had several great backpacking trips and a good tent was essential to the success of these trips. It is almost like a nice reward after a hard day’s hike. One thing we always look for is easy set up. The last thing you want to do when you’re tired is figure out how to set up your tent or have it take a half hour. Now that we have started our family, we also realize that many times the tent will be set up by only one of us and that needs to be done quickly before little feet walk all over it. So, when we started our search for a bigger tent, as our family has outgrown our little 2 person tent, I was excited to find Lightspeed Tents.
At Lightspeed® we design tents that are amazingly quick to set up without sacrificing strength and quality. When designing our tents, we rely on over a thousand nights sleeping in tents of all shapes and sizes and in all weather conditions.
Lightspeed….that is what I was looking for. In a Lightspeed tent, all of the poles are built into the tent and attached to their revolutionary hub system that allows the tent to be set up in seconds. Seconds? That is literally the amount of time we would have available to set up a tent, so after some deliberation, we chose to try the Periapsis 4, which is a 4 person tent.
Now to say we were skeptical about this tent would be an understatement. Tents that we have purchased that are on the more affordable side, typically aren’t the best quality and never last through even a season, let alone several years like they should. I also have a couple “easy” set-up tents that are on a hub system, which I love, but they take more than seconds to put up as I still have to attach the tent to the pole. Once the tent arrived, I asked my husband to take it out of the box so we could look at it. I was surprised that when he said he got it out, he actually had already set it up. It literally took him less than a minute to get it out of the box and set it up for the first time. Seriously, with this tent, you don’t even need to read the instructions, which I know is an awesome perk for many people…like my hubby. If you are still skeptical, like I was, this awesome video demonstrates how the tent is set up and taken down.
The next thing he said was “this is actually a nice tent” and I have to agree with him, but more specifically, here are some of the things I love about this tent.
- Sets up and tears down quickly and easily
- Roomy inside
- Great ventilation with three large windows
- Large front door for easy access
- Dual-peak rainfly which allows visibility out back window
- Packs easily in its own carrying case
As I mentioned above, this tent is roomy. You can see from the picture below that this tent easily accommodates our little family and would be quite comfortable even with 4 adults in the tent. This tent did hold up to the wind we had while testing it out, but I would recommend the front of the tent is facing into the wind for best results.
The tent does come in at a weight of 14 lbs, which isn’t bad for a 4 person tent, but I don’t think I would plan to take this tent on a multi-day backpacking trip. This tent also doesn’t have any meshing in the top of the tent, so we did leave the side windows slightly open, so condensation wouldn’t build up overnight. I would love if the rain fly had the option of a vestibule, since that is where our dog typically sleeps, but since the tent is so roomy, we could get away with letting him sleep inside. Overall, we are very pleased with the tent and look forward to using it as our go to “family” tent for many years to come.
