MANNA BREAD® owes its ancient origins to the Essenes that once lived near the shores of the Dead Sea, whose legacy survives through the Dead Sea Scrolls and other Aramaic manuscripts.

“…moisten your wheat, that the angel of water may enter it…and the blessing…will soon make the germ of life to sprout… then crush your grain and make thin wafers as did your forefathers…”—Essene Gospel of Peace

It is interesting how many types of bread are out there in the world, from our typical wheat and white breads to whole grain and 12 grains. I had never heard of Manna Bread before being introduced by our writer Cassie to Manna Organic Bakery and was instantly interested, who wouldn’t be curious about a bread that doesn’t use yeast, flour, salt, oils, sugar, fat or anything artificial. In fact, at first I thought, “How in the world do they even make the bread!” I love baking bread, but I had never heard of bread without at least flour. And upon discussion of what types of bread they were to send, they had informed me that it is a different consistency due to the way it is made; which just upped my curiosity three fold.

I was given these three Manna Breads and also their Bavarian Whole Rye Sourdough Bread.

Once received they were to be refrigerated, which was also something new. We had immediately tried the Carrot Raisin Spouted Bread, which was my toddler’s choice, and it was like eating something akin to dessert. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, and has a texture similar to a brownie, except for the outer layer where it is grainy in appearance and has a more baked crisp to it. It is delicious.

Except for the Banana Walnut Hemp Spouted Bread (my teens favorite), each loaf is 14oz (although I have sampler sizes). They worked wonderful as a breakfast side to fruit as the children loved the Manna Breads for their sweetness, which is due to the sprouting process which converts starches into maltose and other carbohydrates. If you have any questions about the process and/or nutrition labels, you can visit their FAQ.

Bavarian Whole Rye Sourdough

I’m not a big fan of Rye Bread, but I do like Sourdough, which was going to make it interesting reviewing Bavarian Whole Rye Sourdough Bread! My husband loves Rye Bread, so I was pretty excited to try it. The bread comes pre-sliced for convenience (thank you!). It is made from Organic rye flour, filtered water, sea salt, organic caraway seeds, organic fennel seeds, organic coriander seeds. The one thing I noticed right at first was that it tasted a little sweeter than typical rye bread (which is generally bitter tasting). I have no idea why that is, but I liked it! My favorite thing to do with this bread is to cut it into four little squares and top it with cheddar cheese and summer sausage. Very, very tasty!
Bread Samples

All of their breads are wonderful. They have been a delightful snack, breakfast and even a treat later in the day when we do not want to give our little guy sugary snacks. I love the history behind the bread as well as the flavors that they offer. They also offer Recipes in their store for Vegan Manna Bread Stuffing, Vegan French Toast, Reuben Sandwiches, and much more! So make sure you not only check out the store to shop, but find new ways to use the Manna and Sourdough Breads!

If you want to know a little bit more about the history of Manna Bread, you can read all about it on Wikipedia. I found it incredibly fascinating and it really made me appreciate what this store was offering; a sense of history that gives us a healthier look towards our breads in the future. It’s always wonderful to know that there are people that take these things into consideration, our stories and our desire to give healthy alternatives to our families.

Happy Eating!

I received samples for the purpose of reviewing. Opinions are my own and/or my families and are not influenced by any form of compensation.
