Here at inRandom we are big supporters of reading. Books are so important. Not only is reading important for learning and succeeding in the world, but reading is a wonderful method of relaxation. To me nothing is more wonderful than sitting outside on a cool morning reading a good book. It is so important to pass that on to our children.
I love reading books to my children and they both love books as well. Not a day goes by that we don’t read a few. I had the pleasure of reading Marlow and the Monster by Sharon Cramer. I was pretty excited to review this book because I reviewed another one of her books a while back, Sneezy Wheezy Day, you can read about that book here.
Marlow and the Monster is about a little boy who has a monster and he doesn’t like it. His parents keep telling him that there is no such thing as monsters but Marlow insists that there is. He finally tries to give the monster to his little sister and she was able to make him realize that the monster was nice.
I just loved this story. I know most kids go thru a phase where they think they have monsters under their bed or in the closest, even as an adult sometimes I get spooked something may be hiding in my room! Now I know there are no monsters but who doesn’t get spooked once in a while? This story makes me smile because I have a little boy and he has a little sister who adores him but I can totally see him trying to give a monster to his sister!
The artwork in this story is amazing! Not only does she pay great attention to detail but the artwork in the entire story is done with a quill pen and ink! Each illustration took between 30-40 hours to create! That is amazing! What dedication! The best part to me is the only bit of color is the monster, Cramer did this because “Only the children can see him” How cool is that!
I love that this story addresses a very common fear in kids and shows them that they are in control of their imagination and they can make them into positives. My kids really enjoyed this book as well. We got the book a couple days ago and we’ve already read it probably 20 times! My little 2 year old just thought the monster was so cute, she loves animals!
Marlow and the Monster is such a cute book I think it is a must for any family especially if you are dealing with kids who believe they have monsters in their room!
