Last week my tot and I had decided to drive over to Walmart for no reason and check out their cars and trucks. It was a really hot day and I wanted to make sure we had close parking to the doors so I wouldn’t have to walk him through the muggy heat. I’d finally caught a spot and right before I could pull in a motorcycle coming the opposite way sneaked into it. Completely forgetting for the moment how my tot has this new concept of parking spaces and ownership, I’d said:
“That motorcycle stole our spot!”
I was being playful and silly rather than upset. There was a spot two spaces away and it wasn’t a big deal. I pulled in, parked and went to get my tot out and he looked as though he was going to start crying.
“Motorcycle stole our spot.”
I felt like a horrible person and tried to explain how the motorcycle didn’t actually steal our spot, he just happened to turn in first and we got the one next to him. His eyes bore holes into it as we passed and he kept repeating how he stole it.
Then yesterday we decided to head over to the mall and have some fun at the indoor park. When we pulled in there was this HUGE black truck that tot thought was a real monster truck. He was so excited that he was bursting. We parked next to a Monster Truck after all! The day was off to a great start!
We hung around the mall for an hour, playing at the park, having a treat and coffee (for mom) at Starbucks and just walking around. Tot got to bring home a Melissa & Doug tow truck and he was so happy… until we got to the car and what happened to be in the spot where the awesome, amazing Monster Truck was?
So I spent a long time coaxing him into believing that the monster truck had to go home. He was tired and hungry and probably went back to get some rest in the garage. Tot wasn’t having it, that motorcycle was a space stealer and apparently was the exact same one from Walmart in his eyes.
Thankfully before we ever got home there was a similar truck parked off by a house on the street before ours and he finally believed me. He was happy and clapping to see that the monster truck had in fact, just went home.
A little mishap on my part has sent a toddler tidal wave on whatever motorcycle happens to pull into a desired spot. I guess the good thing is that I won’t have to worry about him wanting to ride one.
After all, they’re spot stealers.
