I wish I could afford to buy you the best gift out there. But I was born poor, married poor and will more than likely leave this world poor. So I decided to use what bit of talent I have and write you a letter.
I know that your children joke with each other about being your favorite. The ironic thing is that all of us are really your favorite. We each fill a unique niche for the different facets of your life. We are all proud to be a favored child of Robert Rue.
Margie is a favorite for many reasons – not just because she’s your first child. She has your skill with leading people. She can see what a person’s strengths are within minutes of interacting with them. She knows how to make the most use of their ability and make them feel good about what they are. She’s probably the hardest working child you have, Margie has been knocked down by life so many times, but she’s never let herself give up. She has learned to survive and thrive. She is giving to a fault. She will often give even though she has a need herself. In this part of Margie, I see you. I can see why she is your favorite.
Debbie is ever changing, yet always the same. She’s not just the most creative of your children, she’s also the daughter who dares to dream, then turns the dream into reality. She doesn’t let other people determine who she will be. She has learned that she has value for who and what she is. She can argue her point so well, that half the time I leave her presence with my own opinions swayed! Debbie always sees beauty in the most ordinary scenes and finds a way to show that beauty to others. She is extremely loyal to her friends and family and will stick up for them even if she knows they’re wrong. In this part of Debbie, I see you. I can see why she is your favorite.
I am your calmest child. Not because I don’t have any problems; I’m calm because otherwise attention will be drawn to me! And more than anything, I hate being the center of attention! I can usually see both sides of any argument. This doesn’t mean I’m a fence straddler, it means I can think with both sides of my brain. I have an unquenchable thirst for new knowledge, and am a bit of a daydreamer. I am deeply empathetic and often feel others hurts and joys as intensely as they can feel it themselves. I am an extremely tender-hearted person. In this part of myself, I see you. I can see why I am your favorite.
Gayle will always be your wild child. She doesn’t know how to slow down, and will probably never actually yearn for solitude. She doesn’t shy away from new experiences, places or people. Gayle hides her pain and emotions behind her sense of humor. She works hard to be self sufficient and will not ask for help until she’s pushed against the wall. She, like Margie, makes people feel at ease almost immediately. She loves people and they love her right back! The friendships she makes are life long and meaningful. In this part of Gayle, I see you. I can see why she is your favorite.
Ralph will always be a sense of wonder. He is the son who was so desired and long anticipated. Ralph can tell a story almost as well as you. He has your fun nature and a sense of humor that is even more out there than yours can ever be. Because you are the type of man you are, you see Ralph as your legacy and he tries very hard to live up to that. He is becoming just as wonderful a father as you always have been. He has bonded completely with his family. They have become the most important part of his life and he is committed to giving them the best life possible. In this part of Ralph, I see you. I can see why he is your favorite.
As our Dad, you gave each of us something that makes us special. You taught us loyalty, respect, fairness and integrity. You shared with us your sense of humor and love of knowledge. Each of us remembers being small and listening to you tell us stories. You even had one of us believing he truly did have a pet wolf! You taught us that the most valuable thing we can own is our reputation. Through your example we have learned that the capacity for happiness does not come through the size of our bank account. We also learned that no matter where we are or what we’re going through, we can always come home. In these parts of you, I see your Father. I can understand why you are one of His favorites.
