Our mission was to create an organic mattress that was comfortable, nontoxic, versatile and reliable—and to give customers a level of service they’d never experienced before from a mattress company.
No one knows the bliss of sleep more than an insomniac, I always say. Though what gave the creator of Savvy Rest the inability to sleep was more due to what he learned while working at a futon store; the knowledge of how some products are made would keep anyone awake.
Thanks to 1973 U.S. law decreeing that all mattresses must meet requirements for cigarette-ignition, most conventional mattresses are treated with toxic fire-retardant chemicals that pose significant potential health risks. The most common class of fire retardants are the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which are widely used in polyurethane foam and other plastics. PBDEs are kissing cousins to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which have been banned for nearly 30 years because they can cause immune suppression, endocrine disruption, behavioral problems, and cancer-and that’s just for starters, according to a 2005 report by the Environment California Research & Policy Center (ECRPC), which also noted that exposure to PBDEs may be especially detrimental to infants and fetuses. – How Stuff Works
After studying up to make sure I was on the same page as the founder of Savvy Rest for this review, I started being unable to sleep as well.
The latest replacement that regulators may want to whack is a flame retardant based on chlorine instead of bromine. The industry says it’s safe, but these chlorinated chemicals are closely related to a product called Tris, which was banned from children’s pajamas in 1977 because it was absorbed into the skin and was found to cause gene mutations. But Tris is now present in a commercial mixture used in furniture foam, baby strollers and other products. “People continue to be exposed to chlorinated Tris, which we already know is a very potent mutagen and probably a carcinogen,” said Linda Birnbaum, the director of the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, in a speech last September. Years ago, Birnbaum, formerly a top flame retardant researcher at EPA, said she did not believe Deca was a health threat, but recent studies changed her mind. She also expressed concern about the prospect of flame retardants interacting with other toxic compounds in the body: mercury from fish; BPA from a water bottle or pesticides in fruit. “Our propensity to think one chemical at a time is probably not where we should be headed,” Birnbaum said. – The Poison Crib
You can read many other articles by reading the Chemical Research Page and/or using Google. Though be aware that you’ll probably lose sleep over it. Given all the information on the Mattress Industry, Savvy Rest decided to make their own pure organic Mattresses – chemical free. They even put their Test Results and Certifications on their page so that you can see for yourself that they are purely organic. With videos such as the The Future of Organic Bedding and Benefits of Organic Wool, you can begin to see why what we choose to sleep on is so important – for ourselves and for our family.
I was given the opportunity to review a Standard Pillow in one of the four available styles. Since I had assumed at the time I knew something about organic wool and molded latex (an assumption I soon realized I was wrong about), I went with the Shredded Latex Pillow.
Soft, shredded latex (blended Dunlop and Talalay) conforms to your neck and shoulders for secure yet moveable support. These pillows are intentionally overstuffed so you can make your own perfect, personal fit. Just unzip the inner and outer casings and remove any amount of fill to create just-right height and density. Approximate height: 4-8”
The Shredded Latex Pillow is very unique, in my opinion. Being capable of choosing the firmness (or softness) of the pillow to ones ideal comfort is wonderful as well as cost savvy. Instead of purchasing a new pillow every time you desire to have something a bit firmer (or softer) you can just decrease or increase the amount of shredded natural latex inside the pillow.
The shredded natural latex inside the pillow can be removed or added easily, you unzip the outer case and roll it down and then unzip the inner case (I appreciated the fact that it was doubly cased.) to remove the filler. I removed mine into a re-sealing bag so that I could save it in my closet. The shredded latex is very soft, very very soft, almost like a fine cloud and when adjusted to comfort inside of the pillow it is quite remarkable. I’m never had a pillow that I could conform perfectly to my ideal. You can also get this pillow in a Body Pillow style.
The other Organic Pillows offered on Savvy Rest are:
The Soap Shape Pillow
Our lowest pillow, this simple Soft Dunlop molded latex design has hollow channels throughout to promote air flow. These are ideal for smaller children and for stomach sleepers. Approximate height: 5”
The Contour Pillow
This Medium Dunlop molded latex pillow has a high, rounded edge along its length for extra neck stability. The lower edge eases positioning and the center hollow gently cradles your head. Approximate height: 4.5”
The Wool Pillow
If you “sleep hot”, you’ll appreciate how this pillow’s organic wool fill helps stabilize your temperature. Wool fiber is a natural insulator (from heat or cold) and improves air flow. Wool also promotes moisture evaporation for drier comfort. Approximate height: 7”
Savvy Rest also offers their individual organic mattresses in Serenity, Serenity Pillow Top and Tranquility.
A Savvy Rest organic mattress is made for you—an individual. The ingenious design lets us customize each mattress for each person. Choose the number of layers, types of latex, and the softness and/or support combination your body needs.
The Savvy Baby Crib Mattress, Savvy Baby Mattress Pad and The Ouef Crib is also available. The Savvy Baby Crib Mattress is the nontoxic crib mattress, a firm Dunlap natural latex core encased in quilted Savvy Rest casing made from organic wool and organic wool batting. There are no toxic flame retardants or pesticides, so you know your child is resting in safe sleep instead of the alternative. It pays to have some peace of mind when our children are sleeping.
There are also foundations, platform bed foundations, organic pet beds, organic bed toppers and bedding; many products to ensure that you can sleep without the concern of chemicals – and sleep being the ultimate desired goal.
This is a wonderful company. I have a lot of respect for people who decide to create safer products for families and honestly, truly believe in what they are providing; guided by the passion to make an product better than what is currently being offered. In my opinion, based upon my review of one of their products, I can tell you that the quality of the pillow I was offered was magnificent and I can only believe that the many other products they offer are of the same remarkable value.
Our bodies need sleep and good rest to be healthy and at their optimum strength for our families and ourselves; especially if you are a mom of a toddler. Getting good healthy rest is important. Before reviewing the Savvy Rest Shredded Latex Pillow, I had no idea about the chemicals hiding in my families sleeping products. It was a bit shocking at first, perhaps for you reading this. It’s important to be aware of what we are purchasing and sometimes the things that are better for us are a little more, but the lasting quality in both the product and in our good health, I sincerely believe holds more worth. It is certainly information to look into and definitely a store to consider for this years spring cleaning.
