Growing up my family has visited Florida many times. My husband and I have visited several times ourselves as well. It has actually been several years since our last visit to Universal Studios, and we hadn’t taken our kids yet. Honestly, I didn’t really think there was much there for small kids and that is why we hadn’t taken them, but boy was I wrong!
My youngest is 2 and she is pretty small for her age so she actually missed the height requirement on most rides by an inch or two. I knew this going in and was a little worried she’d feel left out, but she had a blast! As soon as we got in the park, I took my son to the restroom and my husband and daughter walked ahead; within minutes of catching back up to them they told me she had met the Lorax! My kids LOVE meeting characters and I had no idea that Universal even had characters there! We looked across the way and saw Scooby and Shaggy, which my son has loved for years! We only had to wait for maybe 5 minutes to meet them and the Simpson’s were right next to us, but we didn’t stop to meet them. We were on our way to find some rides!
I made a list before we got there so I made sure we hit all the rides we wanted to and saw everything and still had enough time to park hop on over to Islands of Adventure after.
The plan was to find rides, but walking on the way we saw Curious George just standing in the street waving so we had to go over and say hi! Then while doing that Woody Wood Pecker came out so we posed for a picture with him as well, and I guess Mrs. Woody Wood Pecker? I never knew there was a female one… if anyone knows her name, please let me know!
After that we were on to some rides! (Seriously!) My favorite ride of all time from when I was a kid was the E.T. Adventure. E.T.’s planet is dyeing and you have to help him get there. You hop aboard a bike and fly through the sky on the way to help E.T. My son loved it just as I did so many years ago when I first rode it. My daughter missed this ride by one inch so my husband walked around with her and found the Spongebob store where she got to High Five Patrick! When we got off the ride we raced over and the kids had their picture taken with Spongebob Squarepants, a big favorite in our house!
Right next to that is the very awesome Fievel’s Playland. It features oversized objects for the kids to play on such as giant cowboy hats and tin cans to crawl through. This playland also had some water spray features to keep kids cool in the hot Florida weather.
My favorite er… I mean, my son’s favorite part of this play-land was the 200 foot water slide! Jump in a raft for 2 and splish splash to the bottom on this curvy slide, even I got to go on this slide with him! I don’t know who had more fun!
Next to Fievel’s Playland was the Curious George Goes to Town play area. This was great also! It had a small playground to the side and then a whole town with water features. My daughter stayed on the dry side while my son and brother had a blast playing in the town. His favorite part was the ball pits at the top.
I loved this park because every time we turned around there were more characters and even some performances in the middle of the street! We lucked out and happened upon the Dora and Diego dance party in the street, they even pulled my little girl into the street to dance with them! After we got to pose with characters and the same thing happened with Despicable Me as well!
We completed my list by ending with Disaster!, which is a major motion picture ride starring You! Followed by The Simpson’s Ride which was amazing and Woody Woodpeckers Nuthouse coaster. I would’ve loved to have rode The Revenge of the Mummy again but chose not to since the little ones couldn’t do it, although they do offer a rider swap option so one parent can stay with the kids and the rest go on the ride. When the first parent is done they can trade places and not wait in line which is great!
Our last stop at this park was the new Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride. It was fantastic! You put on 3D glasses and go through “training” and become a Minion! Then you go on one crazy adventure through the super villain laboratory.
There is so much to do at this park, so if you have older kids don’t worry, there is plenty for them as well! Be sure to check out Terminator 2 3D, Twister Ride it Out, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, and plenty more! They also have great Live Shows!
Check here for Part II and I will tell you all about Universal’s Islands of Adventure!
