In 2001 one of my younger brothers had been diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. It was removed successfully, however it was in his motor skills area and he deals with some difficulties in that manner. Later he had to go in for another surgery to remove the scar tissue and both of them left him with very little hair growth for years.
Before he turned 13 a very, very generous Doctor in MN took him under his wing and with all expenses paid he flew my Father and my brother in to have a hair transplant. It was very painful, I imagine. He had to have the equivalent of a balloon under his skin to stretch it so that they could remove the skin that had no hair growth and then stretch over the skin that did. This was wonderful, an amazing thing for a teen boy!
A few days ago my little brother was readmitted into the hospital for an infection in the original scar from a stitch that was not removed. It was found that the infection was on his skull and he has to be in on PICC line (an IV into the heart) antibiotics for a few months. The other issue is that since there was so little skin to work with they couldn’t close the surgery wound and it is still left open and there are many difficulties with that. He’s being seen by many doctors, infection doctors, plastic surgeons, etc and he’s quite frustrated. They assumed he would go in, have it checked out and be able to leave with antibiotics but now it’s a little more serious than that when you take into consideration an open wound and an infection on the skull.
My Father’s family doesn’t have insurance, during those first years of my brother’s diagnosis I had placed a can out on the counter of a gas station I worked at and began the collections for his care. It was then picked up by local churches, etc and most of it paid for his hospital bills. It’s been many years since and that has been taken care of, but this new admittance worries me for my family on both the health and financial accounts. So I’ve been a little out of it lately with all of this going on.
Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and prayers on Facebook when we had all found out. As we are a family blog, this affects many of us. I really appreciate it. Also thank you to everyone that has been so kind to me on my forgetfulness due to being absent minded lately and also for your patience with getting things up for Valentines. My little brother will be okay, I am sure of that, but that doesn’t take away the concern and worry that we all feel so your consideration matters.
