Pocket diapers are quick, convenient, and easy to use, which is why we have several in our stash. One of the things I don’t like about pocket diapers is removing the insert prior to washing…especially when there is a big mess in the diaper. Usually this task isn’t awful, but when it is, it makes me wish I had known about the AppleCheeks diaper system earlier. Once again, Precious Bottom Diaper Service and Baby Boutique was able to show me what I have been missing and offer another great giveaway!

Precious Bottoms let me review an AppleCheeks envelope diaper cover (size 2) with a one-size rayon from bamboo insert. Since I hadn’t ever seen one of these diapers in person before, I was surprised when I saw the insert. Most of the pocket diapers I have used have your typical microfiber insert like the BumGenius diapers. The one-size rayon from bamboo insert looked more like a flat diaper or a prefold. The insert is about 12”x15” and you simply fold it into thirds before inserting it in the diaper cover. Since it is made out of two layers (70% rayon from bamboo 30% organic cotton fleece), when you fold it, you actually have six layers of protection. I have to admit, the insert looked very thin and even though I knew bamboo is very absorbent, I wasn’t confident this would withstand the use of my tot. I am very happy to report we didn’t have any leaks with this diaper. I didn’t use it as an overnight diaper, but I did test it through naptime on several occasions.
The AppleCheeks envelope diaper cover comes in two sizes.
- Size 1 fits approximately 7-20 lbs
- Size 2 fits approximately 18-40 lbs
Sized diapers offer a better fit (less leaks) and a trimmer bum, which means you won’t have to size up clothing for it to fit over this diaper. There are also two rows of snaps in the front, allowing you to adjust fit around both thighs and the waist. To ensure a great fit for slim to chunky babies, there is elastic in both the front and the back of the diaper. The elastic in the leg area didn’t seem very tight, but I didn’t have any problems with leaks. It also doesn’t have the double leg gusset feature that I love for newborns, but since I was trying a size 2, I didn’t get to test it with newborn poo.
The envelope diaper cover itself is very unique in its design. The opening to put in the insert is in the middle, which makes it very easy to stuff. The greatest thing about this style though is that you don’t have to remove the insert prior to washing! The washing machine will actually agitate the insert out of the envelope diaper cover. I really didn’t believe that this would work, but even in a very full load of diapers, the insert wiggled its way right out. How awesome is that! I really don’t need to review any of the other features because they seem trivial compared to this innovative design. I must warn you that after trying this diaper, I have come to dislike removing inserts from my other diapers even more.
Well, if you’re not already sold on the AppleCheeks diaper system, there are several other features I love.
- soft microfleece lining
- waterproof PUL outer
- hint of ruffles…love love love the ruffling
- wide opening for easy stuffing
- cute distinct colors
Plus AppleCheeks also sells waist extenders, which add an additional 2 inches of extra space. That means your little one can wear these adorable cloth diapers even longer! The only thing I don’t really like about AppleCheeks is the price, but when you consider that they are very well made, have a great fit, can function as a cover or a pocket diaper, and are exceptionally cute; the price doesn’t seem unreasonable.
I personally have already added more AppleCheeks to our stash and I’m very happy with this brand. If you haven’t tried them yet, you can also let your family know that you would like a “fluffy” Mother’s Day gift!
