~I received a copy of Rasputin’s Shadow by Raymond Khoury for review. Opinions and stories are my own.~
“Just imagine what you could do … You could make people rush into any store you choose and buy anything you want them to. You could rig an election by manipulating people’s reactions to candidates, make them feel physically sick when one guy is on stage, then make them feel like they’re on cloud nine when your guy’s talking. Or you could be less subtle. Target your enemies, get them to turn on each each other. I mean, in the wrong hands … Jesus. Just imagine. Using it on a packed stadium, or, hell, inside Capital Hill. Senators and congressmen ripping each others’ throats out, live on C-Span …”
That’s only level one.
Level two is worse. A whole lot worse.
Rasputin’s Shadow brings back the well known FBI Agent Sean Reilly from Raymond Khoury’s prevous works, The Last Templar, The Templar Salvation and The Devil’s Elixir. I am personally new to Raymond Khoury’s novels, so although I hadn’t read the previous work that included his main character I was able to jump right in. Each of the novels take you across the world on a ride of historical suspense. In Rasputin’s Shadow, Sean Reilly is tasked with solving mysterious disappearances and murders that stretch from Russia to America.
It begins deep inside a mine in the Ural Mountains in 1916 when miners suddenly, ferociously, attack each other. Shifting between the present day where a Russian attaché jumps to his death, a CIA spook disappears and a retired Russian physics teacher goes missing and the past where Russia was caught in a bloody war where the infamous Rasputin holds sway. Although it seems like there is so much going on, Khoury weaves it together in a way that will shock you time and again. This is an incredible book that any reader can jump into without having to concern themselves too much with Khoury’s previous works. There is enough backstory that it won’t leave you feeling lost. In fact, it’ll make you want to run out and grab the other novels just to follow Sean Reilly on another mystery!
On a cold, bleak day in 1916, all hell breaks loose in a mining pit in the Ural Mountains. Overcome by a strange paranoia, the miners attack one another, savagely and ferociously. Minutes later, two men—a horrified scientist and Grigory Rasputin, trusted confidant of the tsar—hit a detonator, blowing up the mine to conceal all evidence of the carnage.
In the present day, FBI agent Sean Reilly’s search for Reed Corrigan, the CIA mindcontrol spook who brainwashed Reilly’s son, takes a backseat to a new, disturbing case. A Russian embassy attaché seems to have committed suicide by jumping out of a fourth-floor window in Queens. The apartment’s owners, a retired physics teacher from Russia and his wife, have gone missing, and further investigation reveals that the former may not be who the FBI believe him to be.
Joined by Russian Federal Security Service agent Larisa Tchoumitcheva, Reilly’s investigation of the old man’s identity will uncover a desperate search for a small, mysterious device, with consequences that reach back in time and which, in the wrong hands, could have a devastating impact on the modern world.
Packed with the twists, intrigue, and excitement that Khoury’s many fans have come to expect, Rasputin’s Shadow will keep readers turning pages long into the night.
The end of Rasputin’s Shadow will have every reader clinging hopelessly for the next adventure of Sean Reilly. The ending hits like an explosive as Reilly races to stop a killer and find out what happened to his son. An incredible, action packed mystery that you should honestly pick up when it releases on Oct. 8th, 2013!
