Small Business Saturday is an American Shopping Holiday created by American Express and held between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the biggest shopping days of the year. It has become a very important day for our local retailers nationwide as most small businesses are ran by families, just like ours, that depend on sales to get them through the season. By supporting them, you are not only supporting your local economy, but also neighborhood families, friends and peers!
Small Business Saturday “Shop Small” is held on November 24th. You can do so many great things just by waking up and choosing to grab a coffee at a local cafe instead of a big chain, catching lunch with your family at a local restaurant, grabbing ingredients for the next big Holiday meal at local supermarkets and of course shopping for gifts at local toy stores, gift shops and retailers.
It’s the little things we do that make a world of difference in our communities.
I grew up in a family that had their own business, a little restaurant called Dairy Freeze that was in a small town. It was one of those burger joints that had the little red baskets for the french fries and the particular plastic tubes for ketchup and mustard. My Grandmother owned the business and my Mother worked there, later my sister and various other members of my family. As a little girl I remember spending my days after school trying to win the big watch from the quarter machines between the glass doors and eating french fries from the little red baskets. It was sold before I was old enough to work there myself, but my Grandma did get me my very first job working as the dishwasher for a local residential facility where she ran the kitchen. It gives me an idea of what small business really and truly is, they’re families and mentors and memories.
For the next few weeks I’m going to be talking about Shop Small in support of small businesses everywhere – local and online. You can take a moment to support this wonderful cause up until the day by reminding your friends and family through re-tweeting the message and sharing the news!
I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for American Express. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.
