With the birth of our newest little one, our diaper stash wasn’t adequate to accommodate two children. Since times our tough, I really wanted to add to our stash in the most economical yet effective way. That is why we decided to primarily use prefolds with covers for our youngest. Now, I’ve been drooling over the owl print that Sweet Pea Diapers offers for awhile, so when I had the chance to review their One-Size Diaper Cover, I was very excited.
Isn’t your “sweet pea” worth it? We have brought together all the benefits of cloth diapering; absorbent, soft, environmentally friendly, ease of use styling and all the while maintaining, value pricing for you!
The first thing I noticed about the cover is the owl print, which was nice and vibrant. I have washed this cover every other day for over a month and it still looks just as vibrant as the day I received it. The waterproof cover is composed of PUL, which is easy to wipe clean and is very durable.
The one-size cover is designed to fit babies from 10-38 lbs, but I was able to use this cover before the 10 lbs. mark, as you can see on my youngest above. Below, the cover is on my ~24 lbs 20 month old and even on the smallest rise setting, it still fits her. If I put a heavier insert inside, I would probably adjust it up to the middle setting, but as you can see there’s lots of room to grow in this cover. I personally think this cover would work particularly well with fitteds since it is roomy enough to accommodate them.
When looking for a cover that is truly going to work for a new little one, there are two things I consider a must have:
- Leg gussets
- Cross-over snaps or Velcro/Aplix closures
Leg gussets. I can’t emphasize how important this feature is with little ones that haven’t started solid foods yet. This is one thing I didn’t realize was important as a new mom and we had several unpleasant experiences. Now this is one of the first things I look for in a good cover and Sweet Pea Diapers do have them.
Cross-over snaps or Velcro/Aplix closures. With Velcro/Aplix closures, it is easy to get a good fit across the waist. If the cover has snaps, I think cross-over snaps (shown below) are a must to get a nice fit on babies with small waists. Cross-over snaps allow you to start using a cover sooner, which means more “bang for your buck”. Sweet Pea Diapers currently makes covers with cross-over snaps, but they are also coming out with a newborn cover with Velcro closures soon.
One unexpected perk this cover has is the hanging tab that you see above. This makes line drying easy and you don’t have to worry about your clothespins snagging the fabric. It also cuts down on drying space if you just use a drying rack.
If I wanted to add anything to the wish list for this cover, it would be the addition of a partial pocket. This would help hold a prefold in place if you’re not using a snappi. I also would love to see more prints, but more diapers=more stocking=more cost, which leads to price increases. I much rather have a good price with a few prints than lots of prints and a higher price.
We were also given the chance to review a Sweet Pea Indian Cotton Prefold in the newborn size. We typically used a snappi with the prefold since I think it helps contain messes better and then I can get away with using fewer covers. The prefolds come in 3 different sizes, but they all are 4x8x4, which means they have 4 layers of protection on the outer sections and 8 layers in the middle section. I found them to perfectly adequate in the absorption department and it kept the liquids where they should be. The stitching hasn’t frayed and the material is soft, durable, and has withstood repetitive snappi use.
My only complaint on the prefold is the size of the tag. I find tags bothersome myself, so I always try to make sure the tag isn’t touching my baby’s skin. I think a tag sewn flat against the prefold would be nicer or at least one that was a bit smaller.
I didn’t have any leaks with the Sweet Pea diaper cover & prefold combo, except when I forgot to have the prefold tucked in all the way…yes, I did that…but newborns make you tired and do silly things. My daughter rapidly outgrew the newborn size prefold, but we still are able to use like an insert instead. This cover is one of my favorites but if I just consider my covers with snaps, this one is my favorite.
Sweet Pea Diapers makes a variety of other products from one size pocket diapers, a variety of inserts, an innovative All in 3 (AI3) diaper, to accessories like wet bags and nursing pads! They also donate cloth diapers to families in need through Babies in Cloth and to a child development clinic in Lithuania.
You can purchase a Sweet Pea One-Size Diaper Cover for $10.95 and a Newborn Prefold is only $2.75 or 6 for $14.95 at one of their retailers!
