Thousands of years ago, the Giants fought epic battles in Skylands but were banished to Earth. With a new threat looming, it’s time to bring them back to join forces with the Skylanders to defeat KAOS. Only you can put them on the Portal of Power® to unleash their strength in the ultimate battle to save Skylands!
If you have browsed any video game isles in the last few months more than likely you have seen some Skylanders figures that go with the games. I am a lifelong gamer but I will admit I had not played Skylanders before this review. Every time I checked out game sections I kept seeing Skylanders everywhere and I will admit to being more than curious.
I finally got the chance to see what they are all about. To start, Skylanders Giants follows the original game Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. I have not played the original game but while some extra back story would have been nice I did not feel lost without it.
No worries if you have several of the original figures as they work with the new game as well. You have a friend with some of the characters on their xbox but you own a playstation 3…no problem as they are interchangeable across systems.
Check out the trailer clip below to get a better feel of what I am talking about.
I was sent the version for the Wii to review.
Here are the characters out of the box and ready for action.
A nice feature is that you get to pick your difficulty level: Easy, Normal, or Hard. I chose Easy as I had never played before. I found the game fun to play and easy to learn. I like that I can go back later to play at a higher difficulty.
Skylanders Giants are warriors that fought epic battles in Skylands, but were banished to Earth and you play as the different Skylanders characters to defeat the Kaos. Each Skylander figure has different powers and certain ones do better in certain areas. Hence lots of switching of characters throughout the game. I actually like this as it adds a little something different to the game other than just any other game on the market.
Each character that you build up (and all the information) is then saved wirelessly through the portal. It takes quite a while (in my opinion) to build them up to full potential, meaning you don’t have to go out and buy a new character every week. Characters don’t “die” but instead need a “rest” until the next chapter. Lots of shooting but no gore; so this is great for kids!
I feel it is easy to navigate the players through the game while still being challenging and fun. The real fun is changing out the players and building them up.
I feel for the target audience of males anywhere from 6-25 this is a really great game. The starter kit is perfect to get you started. I have seen more of the figures at the store and they do look like they would be fun to collect.
The Skylanders Starter Kit Includes:
- Skylanders Giants video game
- Portal of Power
- Three Skylanders Figurines
- Character collector poster
- Three sticker sheets with secret codes
- Three trading cards
The more I play the game the more I understand the craze. Lots of fun for the whole family really. A great game to get kids really into video games and the figurines make a great incentive!
