~I received Born Free True-Life Stories for the purpose of reviewing. Opinions and stories are my own.~
The thoroughly moving books in the Born Free chapter book series tell the stories of wild animals around the world that have been saved from a lifetime of cruelty and suffering. The Born Free Foundation’s mission is to protect many different species in their natural habitats, working with local communities to make sure that people and wildlife can live together peacefully. These books share inspiring real stories that kids can understand and learn from.
Each Born Free book tells the story of an individual animal or a group of animals that are in desperate situations. When everything seems hopeless, Born Free creates a plan and helps save the day. The books have photography as well as factoids scattered throughout which really gets the kids interested.
In Chimp Rescue, children will meet Chinoise, a young, orphaned chimpanzee who lived in a steel cage in a noisy restaurant until the Born Free Foundation stepped in to save her.
In Dolphin Rescue, children will meet Tom and Misha, a pair of dolphins that lived in a small, dirty swimming pool until the Born Free Foundation stepped in to save them.
In Lion Rescue, children will meet a sad and lonely lioness named Bella who spent her days in a run-down zoo, a bored and dejected lion named Simba that spent his life in a dark, cramped trailer.
In Elephant Rescue, children will meet Nina and Pinky, two elephants that survived terrible misfortunes and were trapped in captivity…until the Born Free Foundation stepped in to save them.
In Leopard Rescue, children will meet a family of leopards named Zeus, Leda, Roxanni, and Rhea, that lived in a small, cramped cage in captivity. Zeus and Leda were born free, but twins Roxanni and Rhea never even stepped foot in the wild.
These books are really aimed at the 7+ crowd and my 8 year old really enjoyed reading each and every one of them while learning so much more than I could ever teach her. Both parents and children will find the stories in these books wonderful conversation starters about life, empathy, taking a stand for what you believe in, and making the world a better place.
