~I received Skyfishing for the purpose of reviewing. Opinions and stories are my own.~
Skyfishing by Gideon Sterer & illustrated by Poly Bernatene is a sweet new picture book from Abrams Kids that shows some special time between a Grandpa and his granddaughter.
When Grandpa—a fishing connoisseur—moves to the city to live with his family, it doesn’t take him long to notice that there is nowhere to fish. Unfazed, his granddaughter proposes they pretend to fish out a window . . . until they actually catch something: a Flying Litterfish! Soon the two are catching all kinds of fish: Laundry Eels and Signfish, a Constructionfish and a Waste-muncher. It’s all in good fun, until the skyfishing attracts the attention of the Troublefish (read: police car). This might be the end of their skyfishing, but it’s just the beginning of their new friendship. Skyfishing is an imaginative debut picture book that celebrates the magic of companionship.
Gideon Sterer is a debut picture-book author and a recent graduate of Oberlin College. He lives in Brooklyn. Poly Bernatene is an Argentinean illustrator who’s worked on more than 60 children’s books all over the world, including Ribbit! by Rodrigo Folgueira and The Princess and the Pig by Jonathan Emmett.
Grandpa moves to the city to be with his family. He quickly learns that his favorite activity…fishing…won’t be happening anymore. Until the granddaughter suggests they pretend fish out the window and they have a great time catching all kinds of “fish” together until they catch themselves some trouble that is. It doesn’t matter because they have discovered they love spending time together and they venture outside on their next adventure. A ridiculously cute picture book to show the love between an old and young family member and the power of imagination.
