~This post is made in partnership with Kohls. Opinions and stories are my own.~
This back-to-school year is a little bitter sweet for me as my oldest became a senior. As this is his most important year for school, I wanted to make sure he had a nice quiet space to study and do his work. Thankfully Kohl’s, my go-to place for everything back-to-school, had so many great Dorm Room Essentials in order to make that happen. He may not be going off to college at the moment, but you can still use so many of these items to create quiet spaces for kids.
Making a great study space for your teens and tweens is really simple! But before you start, make sure the area you choose is clean. I only mention this because it took me a whole week to get my teen to get around to it. You may need advance warning.
One of the most important parts of making a study space is that you make it comfortable. Nothing makes studying more difficult than being in an uncomfortable place. My son has a desk chair, but it’s not exactly the most comfortable thing to lay back in and read, so I had found the Simple by Design Memory Foam Butterfly Chair. In fact, I had to get myself one because it was so comfy and I wanted to steal his!
I also added in a Throw Pillow. Kohl’s has so many beautiful throw pillows and I wanted one that was inspiring. Ours says, “Think Happy Be Happy”, which is very fitting for angsty teens.
You can also pair it with a beautiful plush rug or throw blanket.
Another thing I keep in mind when I am trying to create a space is that it is important to declutter and save space. Somehow writing utensils and cords always multiply and take over everything. I highly suggest getting a small organizer. Personally I went with the Simple by Design Organizing Desk Lamp because it is pretty much everything in one.
It holds all your child’s writing supplies, but also includes a USB charger and an additional plugin!
My last goal was to make the space inspiring and creative. Along with the throw pillow, I added Wooden Box Sign Art on his desk. You can also hang these up or get larger version Wall Plaques.
It was something to show that life isn’t about waiting for what comes to you, but about learning to be happy no matter what comes. School has always been difficult for him and he always persevered despite it. This was my way of reminding him how far he’s come.
I also added the Simple by Design Magnetic Chalkboard Wall Decor. The “chalk” is actually a white dry erase marker and the little dots are the magnetic erasers. I write notes on there to remind him and he writes notes for me! You can also pair this with their square cork boards and calendars to make it a great study wall just for them, or add wall decals for bright pops of color and originality!
If your child is older you can have them create a list of the items they would like and share it with you via Smartphone. The list can also be shared/searched for online in case grandparents want to help out as well! Or pop by any location and in the Dorm section there are paper checkoff lists with all the items available.
For all items Back-to-School make sure to check out their Back-to-School 2015 shop! I got both the boys all their school clothes, shoes and accessories this year with great deals, coupons and Kohl’s cash. This is always our #1 stop for the season!
