~I am a Fox Home Entertainment Insider and received Dreamworks Animation’s HOME for review. Giveaway product provided by FHEI. Opinions and stories are my own.~
What does ‘home’ mean to you? In Dreamworks Animation’s HOME, two unlikely friends, born galaxies apart, come together to find what home and family truly means.
After an alien race called the Boov come to Earth, they relocate the human population to a settlement and take over. A young girl named Tip happens to hide away and unfortunately gets separated from her mother. On her journey she comes across a fugitive alien named Oh who is also trying to hide from the Boov. Oh had accidentally sent a signal out to the alien race they were escaping from, the Gorg, and is now on the run. Together they set out on a quest to find Tip’s mother without being caught by the Boov and the Gorg.
HOME has an all star cast including Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory) as Oh, Rihanna as Gratuity ‘Tip’ Tucci, Steve Martin as Captain Smek and Jennifer Lopez as Lucy (Tip’s Mom). The Soundtrack features great hits from Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez as well. Some of the cutest scenes are when Oh and Tip start ‘getting their boov on’!
And if you love the music, then you’ll want to make sure to get the HOME PARTY EDITION which includes hours of hit music and dancing content for kids.
HOME takes on a lot of different important subjects for kids: bullying, friendship, family and what it means to be human. Although there is a lot of comedy and it’s incredibly funny, there is an underside to Tip and Oh that hopes to teach kids that it is okay to be themselves and make mistakes. Jim Parsons does an incredible job playing Oh, an alien who doesn’t fit in with his hive-minded race and comes to find that he’s more human at heart. I think there is a lot more to Tip’s backstory that could have been presented in the film to fill her character out more, but nothing that kids will miss. You can tell that she understands what being bullied means and what it feels like to not fit in with her own peers and on this level her and Oh relate and find the foundation of friendship.
Many of the best parts are watching the Boovs interact with human objects. Steve Martin as Captain Smek is hilarious! I think families will truly love this film and kids are going to have a lot of fun getting up and dancing along to the music!
Here are some fun activity sheets and printable bookmarks that your kids can enjoy while watching the film or while waiting for it to come out on Blu-ray/DVD tomorrow! Tot loved the code cracker. He’s a really big fan of code puzzles.
