This is my brother Andy. He’s a few years younger than I am and I’m sure you’ve seen his adorable little ones pop up on here cookin’ in Kids Kitchen. He has been suffering from Crohn’s for many years, mostly in silent. There are many people who don’t understand the mental and physical anguish that Crohn’s and Colitis have on people and their families, so let me take a moment to explain what Crohn’s is.
Crohn’s is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract. Those who suffer from this disease often go through periods of intense pain, cramps, bleeding, loss of appetite and energy. The current medications my brother has run through have given him excessive weight gain, constant ER visits, physical and emotional pitfalls and has cost him a great many things he has loved in his life. Watching him go from an extremely healthy, active, professional skater to someone who suffers constantly through this disease and for most of the last few years lived in and out of the ER… it breaks my heart.
Take Steps is the CCFA’s (Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America) national evening walk; the nation’s largest event dedicated to finding cures for digestive diseases. It is happening all over the US, but here in St. Louis it is on May 5th, 2013. It’s a 2-3 mile walk that will raise donations towards crucial research for cures. My brother created a team for us called Crohn Crushers (thanks to my tot’s love of Monster Trucks) and our little group is growing with family and friends! The event will also have food, games and lots of fun for kids as well if you would like to come meet me or participate!
If it is on your heart, we ask that you take a moment to donate to our group; even the smallest amount matters towards the whole of what we’re all working towards. You can visit my page to check out more about Take Steps as well as register and/or Make a Donation. I’ll be updating until the day as I prepare to get ready since I am kind of out of shape and haven’t trekked a few miles in a very long time!
As an added benefit, those of you in St. Louis Area, you can get discounted tickets to an upcoming Cardinals Game! Thanks to the St. Louis Cardinals you can purchase tickets to an upcoming game and help raise money to find a cure. The tickets are normally $44 but you can purchase them for $25! $10 from every purchase will go directly to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation to fund much needed research. However, If you purchase tickets through here please let me know how many so that I can add the $ amount to our team goal.
Lots of love to my brother and many thank you’s to everyone willing to help out our Team!
