As little girls, many of us dream of becoming princesses. Then we grow into awkward teenagers and just hope to survive high school. All those dreams of crowns, castles and prince charming get replaced by prom gowns, college choices and puppy love. My little “princess” is not so little anymore, she is 11 and in the coming school year she will be in middle school. Watching as she becomes completely engrossed in Mia’s journey, I was reminded that soon she would begin a transformation of her own.
In Disney’s Princess Diaries, shy outcast teen Mia Thermopolis just doesn’t stand out. With the exception of her mom, best friend Lilly and Lilly’s older brother Michael, no one really notices her. Making it through high school without throwing up is quite the challenge in itself for Mia, so she is both astonished and less than pleased when her aristocratic grandmother comes to inform her she is actually the Princess and heir to the throne of a small country called Genovia. Suddenly, Mia’s life is a big bucket of chaos as she is groomed and tutored in the art of being a princess.
In the sequel, Princess Diaries 2, we find Princess Mia in a predicament – she has just discovered she must marry right now or her family will lose the crown she holds as the future Queen of Genovia. Comedy ensues as she searches for her Prince Charming and along the way finds who she really is and what it takes to make dreams come true.
I immediately connected with Mia, never really fitting in and being quite clumsy and awkward myself. We really enjoyed watching these movies together and even the boys (my husband and son) did too. They were both well told, comedic and entertaining coming of age stories.
