I have 27 peacocks/peahens…. no really, I do. The first question people ask is “Why?” The answer is simple, I have no idea!
One summer about 8 years ago a lone peahen flew onto the farm and took a liking to one of the ducks that was the same color as her and she would follow that duck around everywhere. The duck liked her too until the day another duck came along then poor Miram was on her own.
Then, like a year or two of her being at the farm she laid her first set of eggs and she sat and sat. We would bring her food because she would not get off the eggs, she was so determined. Over a month passed and she finally gave up because they were not fertilized. It was really sad to see. The following year my father in law bought a male in hopes that Miram’s dream of being a mommy would finally come true and on July 4th, 2009 she brought out the first clutch of peachicks! It was exciting!
Until now. Now every July 4th she brings out a new bunch of peachicks. Every July 4th.
This year she was early and we planned to grab the babies to sell or give away. Have you ever tried to take a baby from it’s mommy? I thought I was going to die! I had my 8 year old farm princess with me and as I am grabbing 2 of 10 peachicks the mommy is all puffed up and jumping at me. I started yelling at my daughter to run cause I just knew she was going to kill us! I grabbed a bucket and managed to catch all 10 and we ran for our lives. My farm princess went outside an hour later and ran back in all out of breath saying “That momma is Crazy! She knows I took her babies and she is trying to get me!” I, being the rational one in my home, thought Nooo! She is a bird. She wouldn’t remember. Would she? So I went outside to check it out, HA! Oh yeah she remembers! We finally had to build a cage big enough for 10 baby peachicks and 1 crazy stalking momma! So I guess we’re going to have more peacocks/peahens this year.
My farm is being overran by Miram.
