I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Aflac. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.
My husband and I have been shopping for a new health insurance policy. Once we realized that most companies are moving towards self-pay or partial self-pay, we figured we might as well do it ourselves. Once we started on the adventure of finding a plan for our family, we began seeing what health insurance doesn’t cover. How even with a financially manageable plan for our family, it wouldn’t cover the “what if” situations that most of us don’t want to consider: broken bones, cancer, strokes, surgeries, etc. I know it is easy to write them off as far fetched chances, but I am sure that the many thousands of people who have been in those situations had once done so as well. Insurance is about covering risk and the plans we were able to afford weren’t going to cover the brunt of the risks we hope to never face.
My husband and I have been over the costs of various things in general, but I was given the opportunity to check out Aflac’s Real Cost Calculator and it shocked me how extremely off we were on how much it would financially bury us if something happened to a member of our family. Take for instance myself. Strokes are very common in women on my side of the family and it is one thing I am always concerned I will have to face one day. So, I adjusted our family’s income and insurance information on the right side of the page as requested and calculated what it would cost if I had a stroke.
Staring at the numbers is a little frightening. On the one hand it makes me realize how I honestly need to start getting healthier and on the other hand it tells me we really need a secondary insurance policy like Aflac, a Plan B as it were.
It is now on our agenda. I always loved how Aflac is not just any old insurance policy, it is an insurance for your everyday living expenses if something were to happen. Something many of us don’t think of until a situation arises and we realize we can’t afford groceries, rent or childcare. I know that playing around with the Aflac Real Cost Calculator has jostled me into realizing that I need to get on the ball with my family’s care.
Take a moment and check it out. As parents we need to face the risks and know how to stay on top of them to take care of our families no matter what happens. I think the Real Cost Calculator helps us to be ready to face those situations… no matter the cost.
