~I received a copy of The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec for the purpose of reviewing. Opinions and stories are my own.~
This film is every bit as extraordinary as the title claims the adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec to be. I wasn’t sure what to expect, although I love Luc Besson’s previous films (The Fifth Element, Léon: The Professional). The film is based on the acclaimed historical fantasy comic books by Jacques Tardi (with the same title) that shares far fetched and mysterious stories around 20th century Paris.
The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec brings in a few of the comic book stories, Adèle and the Beast and Mummies on Parade. It follows her as she uncovers a mysterious Egyptian treasure, tames a wild pterodactyl that has become lose in Paris and all the while trying to save her sister who is stuck between life and death.
The year is 1912. This is the story of an intrepid young reporter Adèle Blanc-Sec and her quest for the power of life over death. Her journey would take her to distant lands to face many dangers beneath the sands. She will go to any lengths to achieve her aims, including sailing to Egypt to tackle mummies of all shapes and sizes. Meanwhile in Paris, a 136 million-year old pterodactyl egg on display in the natural history museum has mysteriously hatched, and the creature subjects the city to a reign of terror from the skies. But nothing fazes Adele Blanc-Sec, whose adventures include many more extraordinary surprises…
I absolutely love this film! It is a wild ride from start to finish with just the right amount of humor, action and creepiness to keep you on your seat. Many critics say it is Indiana Jones meets Amelie, but Adèle is a force of nature all on her own.
I personally watched the film in its original French with English subtitles, so I had to switch the settings to play it that way. It originally plays it dubbed in English without subtitles, but I have a pet peeve with watching peoples mouths not match the words. However, watching it both ways I did realize that they did a very decent job of matching voice actors with great tone and emotion behind the actors/actresses. Kids won’t even notice. In fact, unless you are directly looking at their lips you probably wouldn’t either.
I was pretty creeped out at first with the story of her sister, but then it brought on a whole new element to the story when you see Adèle crack her otherwise intrepid nature and become honestly heartbroken. There are lots of amusing characters and strange happenstance occurrences and the end will leave you wondering and hoping for more. I sat there crossing my fingers, hoping and hoping that maybe, just maybe there was a little bit more to the story after the credits or somewhere hidden on the disc, that is how much I loved the adventures.
