Yesterday I had the incredible pleasure of visiting The Magic House – St. Louis Children’s Museum with my husband and tot. Although we had taken Judah when he was very small, it was still completely new to him and his whole face lit up with so much excitement and curiosity. The Magic House was created as a hands-on learning wonderland for children with everything from their own village to special exhibits like The Jim Henson’s Sid the Science Kid Super Duper Exhibit!
Just as PBS offers a STEM Education Resource Center, so does Sid the Science Kid and his Super Duper Exhibit. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Places like The Magic House offer these educational links to young minds that are naturally eager to explore the world around them and the Super Duper Exhibit has loads of things to keep their curiosity firing! The moment my son walked into the exhibit he said, “This is awesome!” Sid the Science Kid was there to greet everyone and of course there was a bright yellow car to drive, a playground to explore and lots of things for little hands to test and navigate. They even had a huge T.V. for kids to sing along with to their favorite songs!
We kept missing our photo-op with Sid the Science Kid, but there were so many things to do and so many places to be. The truly nice thing is that if your child gets overwhelmed and needs a moment, they have this ‘Calming Room’ with soft music, cushy seats and even a bubbling LED lamp. You can step inside and all the noise disappears, the bright lights go away and you can feel yourself centering. Okay, it’s also nice for parents when they need a little mini break from overly excited children!
No matter where you are in The Magic House, there is something to touch or see. Just walking to the bathroom can be an exploration of music or learning for little ones. Along the way you find all these secret doorways, staircases, hidden rooms that lead to magical little places, slides and secrets….. or even a beanstalk.
No words can compare to simply being there and watching your child gleefully run from one item to the next and knowing that inside of him are all these little working motors gathering and pulling information around. It’s exciting being able to be there and play with them. Judah and his Daddy got to change a tire on a car and we went fishing together!
Taking a trip to The Magic House with your family is guaranteed to be one of the greatest times for your children. Starting today the Sid the Science Kid Super Duper Exhibit opens to the public and is included with the regular museum admission fee! There are fun air guns, hidden objects, a tree-house with pulley’s and an experiment room complete with little journal entries your children can write about their findings. Plus, you won’t believe it, but they even have a little kitchen that shows kids how to do the dishes!
Okay, it’s actually designed to teach kids what things float, but who is really watching?
