As the arrival of our second child rapidly approaches, I have been trying to figure out how to expand our cloth diaper stash to accommodate two children. Since, I am not as intimidated this time, I think that adding prefolds and covers into our stash is the most economical choice, but once again, the choices are numerous. After reading several positive reviews, I knew that I wanted to try the Thirsties Duo Wrap and a Thirsties Cover. Thankfully, as we were considering what to test, I met Rachelle from Precious Bottoms Diaper Service and Baby Boutique and she offered to let me try out some of the products she carries. She has also offered to sponsor several giveaways during the upcoming months!

The first item, I received for review was a Thirsties Duo Wrap Size 2 with an aplix closure in the vibrant rose color. I used the Duo Wrap over a prefold fastened by a Snappi and learning to put the prefold on was a bit of a challenge for me. My daughter is use to “quick” diaper changes and wasn’t willing to calmly lay there while I tried to figure it out, so I watched a helpful video and practiced on a stuff animal before trying again. I have to admit that I was tempted to just lay the prefold in the cover, but after figuring out the Snappi, I really like knowing that the prefold is nice and secure under the cover. I also thought that this method helped keep the messes inside the prefold, thus allowing me to reuse the cover. If you do just lay a prefold or an insert inside the Duo Wrap, it does have a partial “pocket” at the front inside of the cover, which helps keep it in place. The main thing is to make sure the entire prefold is inside the cover, so you won’t have any leaks. After several weeks, my hubby even got the hang of the prefold secured with a Snappi, so he is much more open to using this method for the new baby now.
The Duo Wrap comes in two sizes, size one fits 6 to 18 lbs. and size two fits 18 to 40 lbs. There is elastic on the front and back of the cover and it has three rise settings to help ensure a secure fit. I love that size one fits all the way down to 6 lbs, which makes it a feasible option for a newborn unlike the one size options that typically start at 8 lbs.
My favorite feature was the double leg gussets, which definitely held in my daughter’s messes and I am very confident would contain newborn poo as well. If we do get leaks, it always is around the legs as my daughter has skinny legs. I really like how the double leg gusset fit snug against her thigh, but not too tight.
The only dislikes I have is that the Duo Wrap seems a bit high in the back, so it sticks out the top of some of my daughter’s pants. The side wings are also a bit on the larger size, which makes them cover a bigger portion of the upper thigh. This doesn’t seem to bother my daughter though, so more just a style preference.
The Duo Wrap has a very trim fit, which works great for us, but when I put a fitted diaper on my daughter that is stuffed for overnight, the Thirsties Diaper Cover is much roomier for a more comfortable fit. So, we tried a small and a medium Thirsties Diaper Cover to see if they really were truly roomier.
The Diaper Cover comes in sizes x-small (6-12 lbs), small (12-18 lbs), medium (18-28 lbs), and large (28-40 lbs). The x-small also has an umbilical cord cut out, which is a great feature! You can definitely tell that the covers are roomier and would work well for a chunky baby. We actually used the medium Diaper Cover (pictured below) over a fitted diaper for nighttime use and it still had room to spare. More importantly, it didn’t leak and just like the Duo Wrap, the Diaper Covers have the double leg gussets, which I now wish all my diapers had.
When adding Thirsties to my stash, I think I would get some x-small Diaper covers to use during the umbilical cord stage and then I would use Duo Wraps since I like the trimmer fit. A few Diaper Covers in the other sizes would also be useful for night time or long car rides. Now, I just have to figure out how to decide between all the fabulous colors and adorable prints!
You can purchase a Thirsties Duo Wrap for $12.75 in the Baby Boutique
