Since we are a family blog, one of the biggest things we promote here is family time; especially getting outside with your family! If you check out our Family Travel Spotlight you can see all the adventures we have far away and here in our local areas. But you don’t have to travel thousands of miles to have family time or go to any specific place, you could just go outside.
One of the things we love doing together is going for walks, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing. My tot calls it “going on a long long walk” and we do, we walk for at least 30 minutes a day when it’s not too cold or too hot. Sometimes we play games where we search for colors or items, or my tots favorite – finding specific colored cars. He’s actually learned quite a bit and can name a few cars by brand! The most wonderful thing about going on walks is that it is a way to bond, with my tot and my teen, it is something we can all do together that has no age limit. It’s pure and whimsical, thoughtful and quiet.
Together Counts is a nationwide program inspiring active and healthy living. Something that is incredibly important these days. The principal behind the program is Energy Balance, balancing what you consume with the calories you burn. It’s a first of it’s kind, bringing together over 200 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods, and even insurance companies, trade associations, non-government organizations (NGOs) and even professional sports organizations!
Needless to say it is a program that many, many people believe is important for families and so do I, which I why I decided to share it with you. I’m a big believer of families doing their best to eat together, at least once a week, and being active together. Both of these things not only help with active and healthy living, but they have been proven to help families bond and have a more positive lifestyle.
I really like the part on Together Counts where they have you make a little pledge for the day. Like today’s is:
I think making small efforts every day make it easier to form better habits. One day you could try to read the labels, another day take your kids to the park or try to make time for everyone to get together for breakfast/lunch/dinner. It doesn’t have to be every-single-day right off the bat. It is just a little at a time until you make better habits with your families and in the end, better choices.
Take a moment and check out the program. The articles are well written, it has tips & tools for at home and at school as well as community programs! You can find more information at the links below:
Also make sure you check out how you can Win For Your School, prizes such as a $30,000 Grand to have a Healthy Playground Makeover or $5000 to your schools Wellness Programs!
There are so many ways you can help your family find their energy balance. It’s one of our jobs as parents to make sure our kids are safe, healthy and succeed in life and I think this program is a wonderful tool for us and a step in the right direction for communities.
I was compensated for this post. All opinions are my own and I am a strong believer in what this program is about. My opinions are not influenced by any form of compensation.
