Planning a summer holiday with children is a stressful time for any parent. Trying to choose a destination that will allow you to relax, yet still have plenty to keep the kids entertained, and all within budget, requires a bit of research. A destination I’ve always dreamed of going to (mostly because of Game of Thrones), has a surprising amount of activities available for the whole family to enjoy — Malta! With many great deals on flights to Malta, getting there is a lot easier than you think. So here are my top five picks of family friendly activities that you can enjoy while visiting!
1. Splash ’N’ Fun Water Park
Splash ’N’ Fun Water Park is a big favorite with the locals due to the reduced rates during the afternoon. If you arrive after 1pm then you only have to pay for a half-day ticket. There are a range of slides, along with a wave pool and sun loungers for the grownups to lie on and enjoy some sun while the little ones splash around!
2. Malta Popeye Village
The Malta Popeye Village delivers an unique experience for any family. It’s the setting of the actual 1970s musical film produced by Paramount and Walt Disney! Nestled in the bay there are a range of activities the family can indulge in from wandering through the quaint and quirky houses to sunbathing on the bay and taking in the views. You could even star in your own Popeye movie! The admission price also includes a boat trip, making it great value for money.
3. Open-top tour bus
If you have traveled around any popular European tourist destinations, then you will no doubt be familiar with the red open-top buses. These are great if you are limited for time and want to squeeze in as many sights as possible. A day ticket will allow you to hop on and off as often as you please and it keeps kids from getting tired traveling landmark to landmark. The audio guide is also accessible for a wide range of guests, allowing you to learn a bit along the way as well.
4. Head to the beach
After all that sightseeing what better way to relax than spending time on the beach? It is one of the most beautiful island paradise’s in the world! Parents can happily sunbathe with a good book while the kids spend hours building sandcastles and enjoying plenty of sun and fresh air. A sure fire way to keep them entertained!
5. Head to a local restaurant
While lots of hotels will offer half board or all inclusive options, Malta is a great place to head out on the town for dinner. Taking lots of influence from neighboring Sicily, Malta is packed with family friendly restaurants that serve wonderfully fresh food. It is a great way to teach your children about Maltese culture and broaden their horizons.
These are just a few options to consider when planning a vacation to Malta. Hopefully it provides you with a good starting off point for getting the most out of this unique destination. One day I hope to visit there personally and share the incredible experience I know it will be!
