I recently was given the opportunity to review A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest, the #1 Christmas Bestseller in Vampire Romance, Paranormal and Fantasy on Amazon. I actually first heard about this book when looking up Best Sellers in Young Adult (YA) Fiction, which I’ve been growing rather fond of. A Shade of Vampire in particular had many great reviews and I was really looking forward to delving in!
The ‘book’ is rather short and is more ideally a Book I. However, I thought it was clever from both the writer and reader perspective. As a reader, it allows me to follow along in the story as if I am witnessing a present moment and see it unfold as time goes on – similar to a T.V. series. I rather hate having to wait 2-5 years for a second novel to be written to know what’s going on, this style invites the reader in to carry along with the tale. As a writer, I felt that this was ingenious because the author could gather the opinions as she is telling the story to be able to adapt it better towards the reader. You get to see the positives and negatives while in progress. Very clever.
On the evening of Sofia Claremont’s seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.
A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.
She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.
Sofia’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.
Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.
Will she succeed? …or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?
A Shade of Vampire has its own unique story, especially where the Legends / History of the Vampires are concerned. It is a Vampire romance so a love story between the characters is expected, however there are enough twists and pulls that it does keep you questioning until the very last page. I like Sofia a lot, she’s one part your typical teen and another part a very compassionate woman. It would be nice to see her story unfold on these aspects more, the ‘growth’ of her human self while in such a dark world. The challenges she faces becoming more of who she is in a place where she is seen as nothing more than pretty food.
This is a nice Valentine’s Day pick for any woman who loves this genre. The love story isn’t just fueled with passion or desire as most are apt to do (though it is there), but a keen sense of empathy towards another person – alive or dead – and the choices we make that change the fates of everyone around us as well as our own.
You can purchase A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest (Kindle Version) for $3.99 on Amazon. There is also a Paperback Version for $6.99 if you prefer to hold the book. You can also subscribe to Bella Forrest’s Newsletter to know when the next book will be released!
