I know what it’s like to be hungry. The deep emptiness that rests inside and gnaws away at your spirit. I know what it’s like to really need, to go for days without food so that your child can have what little is left. I know what strength it takes to seek help and the amount of pride you have to give up to walk into a Food Bank. But I also know what it feels like to see the smiling faces of people who reach out to help, who are empathetic in their own ways of your struggle, the knowing of how many people in the world are out there giving towards a purpose and the hearts that never leave you no matter how many years have gone by.
That is my reason for being passionate about Unilever’s Cross Off Hunger Campaign. Since the day I walked out of a Food Bank on a cold December 13 years ago, I have done everything I could to give back towards the purpose of donating meals to families.
According to the USDA nearly 17 million children are living in food-insecure households and not all of them are poverty stricken, many of the households have at least one working adult in the home, as I was. Unilever is committed to donating more than two million meals to families in need with Feeding America and every item on your shopping list counts. Show your support by adding Unilever brands to your cart next time you shop. Together we can help to Cross Off Hunger.
Some of the items from Unilever’s Brands are:
- Many, many more…
The first thing you can do is visit Making Life Better and learn what you can do to help. For each section you complete you earn a “hunger badge” as well as vital information about how you can help your community!
- The first step is to find out what Food Bank’s really need. Not all items are food related! Little things like shampoo and soap make a bid difference for families, especially in taking care of their children.
- The second step is to take the Food Bank Virtual Tour, which gives a look into how Food Bank’s work, a behind-the-scenes, and the importance of volunteering.
- You can also Test Your Hunger I.Q., which is a quiz that helps you to understand how hunger effects our people, young and old. You would be surprised at the statistics provided for educated and working families.
- Finally, you can locate a Food Bank near you where you can contribute. You enter your zip code and it provides a map to your nearest Food Bank.
You may not realize it, but the families you help could be someone you know, your neighbor, your friend, the kids your children play with in your community or possibly even your family. I hope you follow our story in helping to Cross Off Hunger and take the time to participate as well!
