~I received a copy of When Calls the Heart for review. Opinions and stories are my own.~
When Calls the Heart is a Christian period piece film by Michael Landon Jr. and based on the first book in the Canadian West Saga by Best-Selling Author Janette Oke. I really enjoy period piece genre’s and this is set during one of my favorite periods, the early 1900s. It follows a young school teacher named Elizabeth Thatcher who is looking to find the courage to leave her well-to-do life of luxury to teach in the West.
The neat thing about the film is it is like a double story. To understand Elizabeth’s motives, you must also go through the moments in life of her aunt who had walked the same path many years before and to whom she relates with. Reading from her aunt’s secret diary, the film moves between both of the women’s lives and how they find themselves along similar paths and both questioning what God’s purpose is for them.
However, no film is without it’s love story and Elizabeth, as distant as she keeps herself from the possibility of love, finds herself falling for the Royal Canadian Mountie who was sent to watch over her on her trip. Through hardships, they find a common bond and when it comes time for Elizabeth to make a choice between one life and another, love finds itself caught in the balance.
The film is based on the first book of the same name in the Canadian West Saga, so the movie ends and leaves you wondering about the future of Elizabeth Thatcher and the Mountie. Thankfully, it has led to a full series on the Hallmark Channel that premiered in January and you can read synopses of the episodes to date, when the next episodes are as well as take a look at the characters.
Just as the book had touched the hearts of millions of people around the globe, the film brings this beautiful wholesome love story into homes where they can see the characters come to life to inspire new hearts to chase after their dreams.
